Detailed Job Description

Winthrop University is a public, regional, comprehensive institution of approximately 6,000 students located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, which is in the Charlotte, North Carolina metropolitan area. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit in the University, with fourteen departments representing 18 academic disciplines in the fields of natural sciences and mathematics, social sciences, and humanities. The College offers 18 undergraduate major programs; 33 undergraduate minor programs; and 8 graduate programs, including several interdisciplinary programs. The College has approximately 150 full-time faculty members.

The College of Arts and Sciences is one of seven academic units in the Division of Academic Affairs. The College of Arts and Sciences is primarily responsible for the delivery of the Touchstone (general education) Program. The College houses nationally-accredited programs in Chemistry; Mass Communication; Social Work; School Psychology; and Secondary Education Certification in Biology, Chemistry, English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, and Social Studies. It is also home to a nationally-recognized undergraduate research program; various student advising, mentoring, and support programs; and two research centers focused on public opinion research and government program evaluation.

Winthrop University, under the leadership of President Jayne Marie Comstock, is embarking on an ambitious agenda to increase enrollments and to diversify the student body. The University is especially interested in enrolling veterans, post-traditional students, and graduate students. As part of this effort, the College of Arts and Sciences is experimenting with alternative course scheduling and developing new graduate degrees and certificate programs. 

The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Dean’s office staff as one of two Associate Deans. The office includes a student services division, which provides advising services for students across the College; a budget officer; a technology advisor; and administrative support. The Associate Deans and the Dean share responsibility for the day-to-day and long-term management of the College. The specific portfolio of responsibilities will depend upon each individual’s strengths, education, interests, training, and experience.

The successful candidate will hold a twelve-month administrative appointment beginning July 1, 2014.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. (or other terminal degree) in higher education administration or a discipline represented in the College of Arts and Sciences;
  • Previous higher education administrative experience as a program director, department chair, assistant dean, or similar position;
  • Commitment to student intellectual development, demonstrated excellence in the classroom, and ability to teach courses in a discipline represented in the College of Arts and Sciences or in the University’s interdisciplinary Touchstone (general education) Program;
  • A record of scholarship and professional activity commensurate with senior faculty rank; and 
  • Excellent writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or training in some of the following areas of responsibility: Admissions, marketing, and retention; assessment; grant writing and administration; graduate program development and administration; faculty mentoring, supervision, evaluation, and professional development; interdisciplinary programs; and/or strategic planning.
