Academic Advisor (4 positions)

This posting is being used to fill 4 Academic Advisor positions in the office of Academic Advising.

Academic Advisor – LAS Teacher Education
Responsible primarily for helping incoming students interested in teacher licensure with choice of major, choosing appropriate courses, and beginning to define a career path, using developmental advising techniques. Also helps plan and deliver University-wide and School-wide advising programs, such as new student orientation advising, support for General Studies, and support for LAS curricular initiatives.

Academic Advisor – LAS Social Sciences and Humanities (2 positions)
These positions are responsible primarily for helping incoming Letters, Arts and Sciences (LAS) students in the Social Sciences and Humanities with choice of major, choosing appropriate courses, and beginning to define a career path, using developmental advising techniques. Also helps plan and deliver University-wide and School-wide advising programs, such as new student orientation advising, support for General Studies, and support for LAS curricular initiatives.

Academic Advisor – LAS Sciences
Responsible primarily for helping incoming Letters, Arts and Sciences (LAS) Science students with choice of major, choosing appropriate courses, and beginning to define a career path, using developmental advising techniques. Also helps plan and deliver University-wide advising programs, such as new student orientation advising and support for General Studies, and support for LAS curricular initiatives.

Duties/Responsibilities

50% Provide advising services to and monitor progress of students in the assigned areas:
• Conduct individual advising sessions with students
• Assist with course selection, scheduling and registration
• Help student with long-term degree planning
• Help student begin or continue career planning process
• Refer students to appropriate University resources
20% Advise incoming students in a variety of disciplines to help them develop appropriate first-term schedules
• Support new student recruitment and orientation programs
15% Provide support for students with questions about general education requirements
10% Professional Development
• Remain up to date on advising systems and trends in developmental advising;
• Become/remain knowledgeable about the curriculum over time
• Make appropriate use of technology as it changes
5% Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two years demonstrated experience with developmental advising techniques (or equivalent experience) at an accredited institution
  • Working knowledge of computer-based advising systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in either; Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or related OR an academic discipline taught at MSU Denver.
  • Experience working with exploratory students
  • Knowledge of Ellucian Banner, or equivalent system, student information system.
  • Skills in the use of online and social media technology in advising
  • Demonstrated experience in program assessment
