Detailed Job Description

OFFICIAL TITLE:                  Director of Athletics

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Dean of Student Affairs/ Senior Student Affairs Officer

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervise all subordinate professional, classified, and student employee personnel assigned to the area.


The Director of Athletics is responsible for organizing, planning, and directing a comprehensive intercollegiate varsity sports program and an intramural program.


  1. Plans, organizes and directs the intercollegiate varsity sports program and an intramural program.
  2. Assist with preparation and submitting the annual Athletic Budget to the Dean of Students/Senior Student Affairs Officer for review and approval.  Administers this budget within the annual budget allocation in accordance with State procedures and guidelines.
  3. Provides leadership with departmental fundraising activities and grant writing.
  4. Provides overall oversight for facilities management of the Wellness Center
  5. Complies with regulations established by the NCAA and other organizations and conferences in which the University holds memberships.
  6. Attends appropriate professional athletic and institutional meetings.
  7. Prepares and coordinates annual schedules and contracts for intercollegiate and intramural athletics.
  8. Arranges for officials, referees, transportation, meals, and hotel accommodations for athletes and athletic staff.  Supervises the coordination of security, public relations, game management, and game sites for all athletic contests.
  9. Schedules and coordinates with other college personnel, the maintenance and preparation of athletic facilities for intercollegiate and intramural contests.
  10. Prepares and maintains student athletic eligibility lists related to appropriate external organizations and athletic conferences.
  11. Provides overall leadership in the recruitment and retention of student athletes.
  12. In cooperation with other campus offices, coordinates the inventory and maintenance of athletic equipment.
  13. Performs other related duties on an emergency or interim basis as assigned by the Dean of Students/Senior Student Affairs Officer or his/her designee.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.


  1. Master’s degree required.
  2. Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a comprehensive athletic program and department.
  3. Thorough knowledge of major athletic programs including rules, regulations, and equipment.
  4. Five (5) years of Athletics related administrative responsibility at the collegiate level.
  5. Knowledge of planning, budget preparation, and financial management procedures necessary for an athletic and recreational program.
  6. Experience in resource development through fundraising activities and grantsmanship.
  7. Demonstrated experience in management of an athletic facility.
  8. Knowledge of and experience in the duties and responsibilities listed in the job description.
