Assistant/Associate Professor & Director of University Seminar
Southern Oregon University
SOU invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor to serve as Director of University Seminar, Southern Oregon University's 3-term required sequence of writing/critical thinking/information literacy. This position supervises 20+ professional and professorial faculty; manages all aspects of program and curriculum development; monitors enrollment, successful completion, and assessment of 800 first year students. Appointment includes teaching one 3-term seminar.
Teaching assignments may include University Studies/Seminar, online courses, Medford and Ashland campus classes, and day, evening and weekend courses.
Administration, Teaching, Scholarship, and Service.
Oversee and direct all faculty, student, and curriculum decisions for required first-year course for entering students. Recruit, hire, supervise, and support faculty from Professorial and Professional ranks within the department, and from adjunct pool. Support effective teaching and advising through faculty development, faculty/student evaluations, and strong relations with Academic Support programs, Hannon Library programs, and Student Affairs. Manage University Seminar enrollments, support SOU student recruitment and retention goals, and manage student relations with University Seminar faculty. Advise and track students with transfer credits on catalog requirements for fulfilling University Studies Foundation goal. Collaborate with faculty to develop and maintain FYE curriculum that delivers content and pedagogies to support student learning and achievement. Coordinate assessment practices within program and within broader institutional assessment and accreditation requirements. Supervise University Seminar budget. Teach one section per term of University Seminar topics and/or workshop.
(Fundamental/critical requirements of the position) PhD in Rhetoric/Composition or related field. Experience and training in first-year composition, writing program, or writing center administration. Excellence in teaching. Expected scholarly activity. Commitment to student assessment and retention.
(Preferred qualifications that are not essential to performance of duties) Experience with/ability to interact with diverse populations and widely varied student demographics. Experience managing budgets and finances.
