Liberal & Civic Studies is a longstanding interdisciplinary liberal arts major that emphasizes critical inquiry, civic and environmental responsibility, cultural awareness, ethical values, active global citizenship and self assessment. This program serves as the primary course of study for students pursuing careers in education – especially at the elementary level – and non-profit or community advocacy work.  As an adjunct faculty member in the Liberal & Civic Studies Program, the successful candidate will help to support the core course offerings in the program, including L&CS 121 (Culture and Civic Responsibility), L&CS 122 (Environmental Responsibility in a Global Community), L&CS 123 (Modern Global Issues), L&CS 124 (Senior Capstone Project) and L&CS 130 (Assessment and Portfolio). The new faculty member may also have the opportunity to teach one or more partial credit service learning courses related to the themes outlined in the courses above, and to participate in reviewing and developing new curricula in the areas of social justice, community studies, and leadership theories and pedagogies.   

Responsibilities


Primary Duties

•Teach five or more courses per academic year from the L&CS offerings listed above.

•Advise students on academic matters and course scheduling.

•Participate in program planning meetings.

The successful candidate may apply to teach in Saint Mary’s College’s signature programs: Collegiate Seminar and January Term.


Experience and Qualifications:


• PhD or other terminal degree.  Emphasis on Education Studies and/or Leadership Studies, including teacher training, early childhood development, social justice pedagogy, diversity, multiculturalism or global leadership.  

•At least three years of college-level classroom teaching or equivalent experience required.

•Demonstrated history of participation in or leadership of community engagement projects, service learning and/or community-based research. 

•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

•Strong desire to contribute to Saint Mary's College in its threefold Catholic, Lasallian, and liberal arts traditions.
