Detailed Job Description

The CPSPE consists of two departments (in four buildings), 40 research active faculty members, two associate deans responsible for assisting the Dean with the academic and research activities, 30 staff members and contract professionals, 320 graduate students, and about 40 research scientists.
The University of Akron (, positioned to be the premier public research university of northern Ohio, is one of the largest universities in the state with an enrollment of approximately 28,000 students in over 200 undergraduate and graduate majors.  Over the past ten (10) years, the University has engaged in extensive capital investment to develop and upgrade world-class facilities for academics and student life.

The successful candidate will be an internationally known, leading expert in the field of polymers and/or soft matter; a visionary, with a strong technical and organizational vision for advancing the college; an outstanding manager and leader with administrative experience; a strong fundraiser with a record of competitive research funding, prepared to advance CPSPE by facilitating growth of research funding and gifts; and an outspoken and effective advocate for the college, able to effectively promote CPSPE interests at the university, state, and federal levels.

 Each candidate is required to hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Polymer Engineering or Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related field and administrative experience as either a department chair at a major research institution, a dean or director of a major federal research center at a University, or as a program/division technical director or comparable position in government/industry.
