Detailed Job Description

The Department of Elementary Education and Literacy at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applications for a full-time tenure track reading faculty member at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2014.


This position requires teaching the equivalent of 12 semester hours of courses, day and/or evening classes, in reading/literacy in a pre-service teacher preparation program. Courses may include primary, intermediate, or secondary reading/literacy foundations, assessment, and instructional decision-making. Must advise, work with, and be sensitive to the educational needs of students from a diverse urban population. Additional responsibilities include university and community service as well as scholarly activity. The University is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.

Required Qualifications

ABD in Educational Studies with a reading/literacy emphasis.

Preferred Qualifications

*An earned doctorate in Educational Studies by August 2014 with a reading/literacy emphasis.
*Demonstrated effectiveness in academic. instruction and clinical supervision of licensure students in university teacher preparation programs.
*A minimum of three years of grades P-12 teaching experience.
*Demonstrated experience, ability, and preparation to teach effectively to a diverse student population, including students of color and other underrepresented students.
*Willingness to collaborate in school partnerships.
*Documented expertise in the area of teaching reading/literacy development at the college level.
*Demonstrated technology expertise in such areas as instructional use in the classroom, or online teaching.
*Evidence of working in urban school settings.
