Music/Choir Director Associate Faculty Pool

The Mission College Music Department is a small, but growing department featuring Advanced Piano instruction, Symphony Orchestra and a strong Digital Music Program. We are opening our associate faculty pool to applicants interested in developing a choral program at Mission with emphasis on traditional and popular choral music.

The Mission Chorus is one of three core ensembles that provide performance experience for Music Majors. The Choir Director is responsible for recruiting and maintaining the choral program, selecting appropriate repertoire and scheduling performances both on and off campus as part of our Mission College Performing Arts Series.

Mission College is located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Our faculty is among the most qualified in the state and our students appreciate the college for its friendly staff and supportive atmosphere.

Assignment may include day and/or evening classes, Mondays thru Saturdays as needed during spring, summer, fall, and/or winter sessions, beginning Spring 2014. This recruitment process is to pre-qualify you for possible future assignments. Successful completion will result in your name joining a pool of instructors qualified to teach music courses for Mission College. As an assignment becomes available, you may be contacted to determine if you are available to teach.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is based on a percentage of workload up to a maximum of 67% (percent). Salary is prorated based on a minimum salary range of $18,261 – $21,688; maximum earnable up to $29,559.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in music; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in music AND Master’s degree in humanities; OR
  • Possess a valid California Community College Instructor’s credential in music; OR
  • The equivalent of the above; AND
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel or work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Degrees must be obtained from an accredited institution.
  • Candidates with degrees not identical to the required state or local qualifications must apply for equivalency by completing the equivalency form which is part of the application package. This form must be completed for employment consideration.
  • Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification of equivalency to U.S. degrees by a certified U.S. credential review service. Simple translation of the language on foreign diplomas, transcripts, coursework, or similar will NOT suffice; thus, will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Education and Experience: Bachelors degree including course work in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design, Media Communications, Computer Science or related discipline and at least two years experience in instructional design including online learning, preferably in a community college educational environment OR four years of equivalent professional experience including at least two years experience in instructional design including online learning, preferably in a community college educational environment.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:

  • Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation for in-class or on-line/distance education activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students outside of class and/or on-line, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college.
  • Submit, when due, attendance rosters and grade reports.
  • Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
  • Maintain office hours each week, at .5 hours per week per section.
  • Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.
  • Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the members’ area of expertise.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.

Other Duties:

The Choral Director will also work with the music department chair to develop a schedule for the Mission College Performing Arts Series and to help facilitate on-campus performances and participation in choral events, festivals, competitions and workshops.
