Detailed Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Marquette University (MU) invites applications for the tenured position of Professor and Department Chair.  Biomedical engineering (BME) at Marquette was one of the first programs in the country, beginning as a Program in 1960 and becoming a Department in 1989.   The Department serves 380 undergraduate and graduate students (including 27 doctoral students), and currently has 13 full-time regular faculty and over 40 associate or adjunct faculty, many with primary appointments at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Zablocki VA Medical Center.  The Department has a well-established co-operative education program with ties to the strong medical device industry in the Midwest, with over 65% of BME undergraduates having industry experience prior to graduating. The College of Engineering recently completed a new state-of-the-art building that directly integrates teaching and laboratory experiences in BME.  During the Fall 2012 BME expanded into four new integrated teaching laboratories and added four new research laboratories, with opportunities for further expansion.

Unique educational features at the graduate level include joint degree programs with the MCW at the doctoral level in Functional Imaging and at the master’s level in both Health Care Technologies Management and Bioinformatics. The NIH-funded Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI) of Southeast Wisconsin, which includes eight member organizations and targets collaborative research, provides research opportunities in rehabilitation science and engineering, orthopedics, biophysics, neurology and neuroimaging, cardiopulmonary mechanics and metabolism, functional imaging, computational biology, and pediatrics.  Additionally, MU houses a highly-ranked Physical Therapy program and the only School of Dentistry in the state, both with a long history of collaboration with Biomedical Engineering.  The Department’s strategic vision is to further develop research and educational opportunities both intramurally and extramurally.  The vision for extramural collaborations includes increased collaborative research activities with the MCW Biotechnology and Bioengineering Center that build on strengths in computational physiology, physiological genomics and proteomics, as well as with the MCW Cancer Center’s expanding program in functional and molecular imaging.

The ideal candidate will have an earned PhD in Biomedical Engineering or a related engineering field, a strong history of extramurally funded biomedical research, educational experience in biomedical engineering that includes development of novel curricula and/or multi-institution educational partnerships, and the vision and leadership skills that will further develop partnerships and collaborative initiatives in BME at MU and in the greater Milwaukee region.  A competitive start-up package is anticipated for this position.
