The College of Wooster announces its search for a Vice President for Finance and Business and invites nominations and applications for this position. Founded in 1866, Wooster is a private, highly selective, residential, liberal arts college.  Building the finest liberal arts education around a program of mentored undergraduate research culminating in Wooster’s renowned Independent Study provides both gravity for the undergraduate experience and a common touch point for alumni across generations.  It is situated on a beautiful, park-like, 248-acre campus in the community of Wooster, Ohio, which boasts a population of 26,000. The College is located less than an hour away from two airports and the cities of Cleveland, Canton, and Akron.

Wooster has experienced strong enrollment during the last four years and is balanced at its ideal enrollment of just over 2,000 students.  The College has an operating budget of $80 million, an endowment of $247 million, and only $28.7 million in outstanding debt.

 The vice president for finance and business, reportingdirectly to the president, serves as the institution’s chief financial officer, overseeing all matters related to the operation and financial management of the College. The vice president is the primary steward of Wooster’s financial, human, and physical resources.  Working in close partnership with the president, his cabinet, other key members of the senior administrative team, the faculty and other college constituencies, the vice president plays a central role in all major undertakings at the institution and is integral to the College’s rigorous planning process.  The vice president is responsible for oversight of budgeting, the business office, facilities and facilities planning, investments, grounds, purchasing, human resources, the bookstore, and food services. The vice president has nine direct reports, and the division has 290 people and a budget of $22.5 million.  The vice president is the key liaison to the Board of Trustees’ committees on finance, campus stewardship (buildings and grounds), investments, and audit. The vice president serves as vice chair of the Financial Advisory Committee, which provides input to the administration on the College budget and other financial issues. The vice president also supports town- gown relationships.

The successful candidate will be a collaborative, confident, innovative, energetic, and self-assured financial leader with a demonstrated commitment to collegiality and transparency. He or she will be an exceptional financial strategist with superior analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills. He or she will be culturally and contextually astute with knowledge of the higher education landscape and have a broad portfolio of leadership accomplishments in progressively more senior management roles, preferably in higher education.  Experience should include demonstrated expertise in facilities and facilities planning, financial operations, accounting principles, debt financing, endowment management, tuition pricing and discounting, budget modeling, strategic financial analysis and planning, and human resources. He or she will be pragmatic and wise and be known as a trusted leader. The new vice president will be prudent but willing to take measured risks. 

The successful candidate must have at least ten years of progressively more responsible leadership experience and significant supervisory experience.  A bachelor’s degree is required, and a CPA, MBA, or other advanced degree is preferred.
