The leader in this role is responsible for assisting the AVP, Facilities by collaboratively working to promote Sustainability College wide. Champions excellent stewardship of the college's habitats and resources and reduction of the college's carbon footprint. Establishes a commitment to the education of students, staff, and community members on the preservation of the college's environment for future generations.

Primary Work Location

West Campus  


1. Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution [required] in environmental science, sustainability, landscape architecture, or a related field.
2. Progressively responsible experience in developing and leading sustainability initiatives and programs, preferably at the community college level.
3. Experience in planning, implementing, and managing projects.
4. Experience using a PC and related word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and web site design software.
5. A demonstrated commitment to diversity.
6. Acceptable eyesight (with/without correction aid).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Knowledge of environmental assessment techniques, current sustainability trends, and best practices.
2. Knowledge of the principles and practices of general facilities operations and energy management.
3. Knowledge of principles and practices of project planning and management.
4. Skill in effectively communicating in writing and verbally, in both one-on-one and group settings.
5. Skill in the proficient use of a PC and related office software, including basic web site development.
6. Ability to exercise leadership and influence others through the use of organization, supervisory, and interpersonal skills.
7. Ability to take initiative and to work with minimal supervision.
8. Ability to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships.
9. Ability to handle multiple priorities and assignments, organize work, make decisions, and function independently.
10. Ability to adhere to strict deadlines on a continuing basis and function effectively under heavy workloads during peak periods.
11. Ability to analyze and interpret technical and environmental data, and prepare reports.
12. Ability to prepare and deliver presentations to a wide variety of campus audiences.
13. Ability to work effectively in a diverse community and meet the needs of diverse student populations.

Essential Job Functions

1. Fosters involvement, support, and awareness for sustainability efforts across the campus. Chairs the college-wide sustainability committee.
2. Leads and develops the integration of sustainability practices into campus activities, clubs, and orientation. Assists with the integration of sustainability in the curriculum.
3. Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to promote sustainability to all levels of the organization. Publicizes sustainability efforts through a variety of media, including the college's sustainability website.
4. Implements and monitors the Climate Action Plan and the overall environmental health of Valencia's buildings and natural environments.
5. Oversees college-wide sustainability and recycling efforts, and coordinates efforts with Facilities and Plant Operations.
6. Oversees the campus energy management and education programs.
7. Collaborates with the Office of Resource Development to identify, explore, and apply for grant funding to support sustainability efforts.
8. Interacts with local sustainability agencies, including colleges and universities throughout the region. Identifies and adapts sustainability best practices from other organizations.
9. Drafts future sustainability strategic plans in coordination with the college community.
10. Prepares the annual carbon footprint report for the
ACUPCC (American College & University President's Climate Commitment).
11. Keeps abreast of all government sustainability legislation, which may affect the college.
12. Supervises professional, administrative, and/or student staff.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.
