Detailed Job Description

The Director is responsible for assessing college-wide student learning outcomes, analyzing data, and reporting results on issues of importance to the campus.  Promotes and fosters a culture of evidence and assessment across the college and provide training on current assessment practices and procedures, especially for chairs of departments and directors of programs.


  •  Design and implement studies to assess college-wide student learning outcomes:  Wooster’s Graduate Qualities
  • Analyze data and report on the results of assessment projects and surveys and provide rigorous feedback to support continuous innovation and improvement
  • Promote and foster a culture of evidence and assessment across the College
  • Provide training on best practices in assessment for department chairs and program directors
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators in design, implementation, and data analysis for institutional assessment of the curriculum and educational programs of the college
  • Prepare reports on and facilitate the use of assessment findings for curricular development, institutional planning, marketing and public relations
  • Support departments, offices, and individuals in the design of assessment plans for programs, courses, special projects, and grant proposals
  • Provide support in the construction and analysis of assessment models and survey instruments, assessment strategies, instrument design and selection, and interpretation of assessment data
  • Facilitate communication of assessment results, resources, and best practices through a variety of venues including digital media and printed reports
  • Support the Educational Assessment Committee by providing leadership in the development and implementation of an institution-wide educational assessment plan, departmental and Academic Affairs and Student Life assessment plans, and special assessment projects
  • Participate in professional development activities to remain abreast of current developments in assessment and external accreditation and identify assessment training and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff
  • Advise the Provost and Deans on all matters related to educational assessment
  • Represent the College in the broader assessment community in higher education, and participates actively in that community


  • Master’s degree in educational assessment or a related field and five years experience in the application of statistical analyses and survey design, interpretation of survey data, implementation of research instruments, and organization/presentation of research-based information, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of assessment theory and practice.
  • Familiarity and commitment to liberal arts education.                                                                                                   

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret profession-related periodicals, journals, or technical procedures.  Ability to write reports, briefings, web page content, and business correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, and the general public in English.  Ability to be clear and concise in verbal and written communication.

REASONING ABILITY:   Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or verbal instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.                                                                                                                                                                                      

COMPUTER SKILLS: Knowledge of a campus-wide database and query capability, download and other utilities. Proficiency in WORD, Excel, Access, Publishing and PowerPoint; SPSS or related statistical software.  Knowledge of survey and web-authoring tools.
