Detailed Job Description

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Winthrop is a comprehensive public university with a tradition of preparing students for a variety of post-baccalaureate work. The Department of Mathematics has two undergraduate options for degrees in mathematics; houses the program for mathematics certification in grades 9 through 12; provides a sequence of content courses specifically for K-8 teachers, offers professional development for area K-12 teachers, and provides theoretical and applied mathematics courses for a variety of audiences.  Responsibilities include:

  1. Teaching a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics and mathematics education, as well as courses in the Touchstone Program;
  2. Coordinating the teacher education program in the department, including supervising of in-service teachers;
  3. Aiding in the administration of mathematics courses for elementary and middle-level education students;
  4. Acting as liaison between the department and the College of Education and teacher education programs within the College of Arts and Sciences, including engagement in the NCTM/CAEP accreditation process;
  5. Advising and mentoring of mathematics majors;
  6. Participating in professional service activities for the department, college, and university;
  7. Continuing productive research/scholarly activities; and
  8. Contributing to the creative and intellectual atmosphere of the department and university.


  1. Ph.D. in mathematics education or in mathematics with suitable coursework in mathematics education (If the candidate is ABD at the start of employment, the appointment will be as a non-tenure track instructor);
  2. Certification (present or past) as a classroom teacher with K-12 teaching experience;
  3. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and strong commitment to student learning and development;
  4. Evidence of an ability to maintain an active scholarship agenda; and
  5. Instructional experience using technology such as dynamic geometry software and hand-held devices.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:  A 9-month, full-time, tenure track appointment with the option of summer employment if funds are available.  Rank and salary will depend upon experience and qualifications.
