Detailed Job Description

OFFICIAL TITLE:                    Director of Safety and Security

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:     Reports to the Dean of Student Affairs

SUPERVISION EXCERSIED:   Supervises subordinate administrators, classified staff, 03 staff, student employees, and contractor employees assigned to the Department of Public Safety.


The Campus Police Chief is responsible for the overall public safety and protection for the students, employees and visitors to the campus as well as the property of the commonwealth of Massachusetts. This include normal policing functions related to campus security, such as crime prevention and investigation, traffic control, physical plant integrity and access to the grounds by authorized individuals and the general public. Commanding a force of 15 campus police officers who are armed and warranted, and clerical assistants, the chief is also the lead person in incident command for the Emergency Response Team on Campus. The chief should be a person with a strong track record of progressively responsible positions in law enforcement, preferably in an urban setting with some higher education experience. The Chief must be sensitive to the needs of a diverse population comprised of over 500 faculty and staff and over 5,500 traditional, non-traditional, resident, and commuter students. Community relations with Campus neighbors are also a prime responsibility of the department. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record with proven administrative leadership and effective communication skills.

The department is currently in the process of being reviewed for accreditation by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission.


  1. Directs and coordinates all aspects of the University Police Department
  2. Directs and coordinates the physical safety of the University Community and the University's materials assets, formulation of policies and procedures for University wide key control.
  3. Directs and coordinates traffic related activities, including policies and procedures, parking space, issuance of parking permits, parking violations, University Hearings Officer, and the Office of the Parking Clerk.
  4. Develops, evaluates and reviews written Department policies, procedures, rules and regulations; ensures proper dissemination to all Department staff, insuring compliance of same by all Department staff,
  5. Provides effective short term and long range planning for the Department.
  6. Provides mandates/ required training for all personnel in the University Police Department; provides professional growth seminars and other suitable training for administrators and classified employees.
  7.  Supervises the collection and preparation of special reports and ensures proper dissemination of same.
  8.  Prepares, reviews and revises staff work schedules and Department forms to ensure accuracy and efficiently.
  9. Supervises the investigation and reporting of all incidents related to Department activities and represents the University at appropriate campus judicial hearings and civil court procedures.
  10. Develops and coordinates appropriate department records keeping systems.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Affairs and Chief Student Affairs Officer.
