Detailed Job Description

The Academic Counselor is a full-time, twelve-month position that consists of responsibilities associated with the effective operation of Skidmore's Opportunity Programs, including:

  • Providing academic counseling, interdisciplinary academic support, and psychosocial support for students during the academic year and the Summer Academic Institute.
  • Developing and delivering workshops to help OP students adjust to, and thrive in a liberal arts college environment.
  • Monitoring students' progress as they work toward their degrees; collecting and analyzing annual data; and, assisting with the completion of State Education Department reports.
  • Recruitment and admissions work, involves some travel.
  • Writing letters of recommendation for jobs and graduate school; and, helping students to complete applications for national and international scholarships.
  • Serving on various committees; and, other duties associated with the Opportunity Program and Student Affairs Staff as assigned by the Director.

A Master's Degree in an academic discipline and/or education-related field.  Experience in interdisciplinary academic support and program delivery. Excellent writing and oral communication skills. Strong interpersonal and counseling skills. Knowledge of national issues regarding access and achievement of individuals from under-represented populations; and, a commitment to social justice work. Flexibility to work nights and weekends when necessary.
