Montgomery College is a two-year community college in Maryland with three campuses located in suburban Washington, D.C., with an annual credit student enrollment of over 35,000 students, more than 25,000 continuing education enrollments, and 1,800 regular employees.

Therefore, Montgomery College is currently seeking a dynamic leader to serve in the significant role and position of Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (Chief Academic Officer), position #1076. The position is located in Rockville, Maryland.

The Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs reports to the President of Montgomery College and serves as its senior learning officer by providing collegewide vision, leadership, direction, and coordination for all instructional programs at the College, both credit or noncredit. The Senior Vice President’s direct reports include the three College campuses’ Vice Presidents/Provosts, the Workforce Development & Continuing Education Vice President/Provost, and the Director of the College Libraries.

The President’s vision, coupled with her belief that the community college educational experience has a positive and lasting impact on students’ lives, means the successful candidate will be expected to exercise creative leadership and innovative thinking in achieving this vision particularly with regard to implementing initiatives such as President Obama's College Completion Agenda. The position is responsible for the creation and implementation of the College's Educational Master Plan, and represents the College with state and national officials in the community college arena.

As the Chief Academic Officer, the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs supports the College's discipline and program review process as well as the outcomes assessment projects and guarantees that the results of these activities are appropriately incorporated into the instructional program for the future.

The Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs serves as part of the President's Senior Administrative Leadership Team, the President’s Executive Council, and other leadership groups, and in so doing is the chief presidential adviser with regard to curricula, course delivery, and the full array of programs. The position assures that Montgomery College actively explores and engages in best practices with regard to its programs and course delivery, particularly staying attuned to innovative ways to facilitate student achievement, success, and ultimate goal completion. The position also provides the senior leadership for all external educational partnership activities.

The Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs represents the College, serves on committees of many educational bodies, and meets with counterparts at the University System of Maryland's Universities at Shady Grove as well as other colleges and universities. The Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs also represents the College to a variety of educational entities, and participates as a board member of organizations in Montgomery County.

Finally, the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs leads institutional efforts in grant seeking related to improving the instructional program, along the lines of best practices, particularly addressing those course areas that serve as barriers or institutional gatekeepers, thereby facilitating greater opportunity for student success.

• An understanding of community college financing and experience managing resources while continuing to offer quality instructional programs.
• Demonstrated experience in effective communication that engages faculty, staff, and administrators in collective decision-making.
• Demonstrated successful experience in contemporary educational issues, including accreditation, programmatic outcomes assessment, and strategic planning.
• Successful experience representing an institution in a variety of venues and settings involving partnerships with colleges and universities, and/or K-12 school systems.
• Demonstrated experience promoting professional development among employees in a college environment.
• Demonstrated effective teaching experience as a faculty member.
• Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity.


Candidates who meet any of the following preferences should include responses to each within a cover letter.

• An earned doctorate in an academic discipline offered at Montgomery College.
• Three or more years experience as a senior academic leader (vice president level or equivalent).
• Three or more years experience as an administrator in a multi-campus or large campus community college.
• Demonstrated curriculum development as a faculty member or administrator.
• Successful experience representing an institution in a variety of venues and settings involving governmental relations with legislative officials, and other community stakeholders.

As a condition of employment, the following are required:

• Completion of a background check including a credit report.
• Receipt of an official transcript of highest degree earned.
• Completion of financial disclosure form with the Maryland State Ethics Commission.
• Participation in a retirement plan (State of Maryland requirement).

The salary range is $99,736.00-169,790.40, with the starting salary generally falling within the first half of the range.
