Detailed Job Description

Position in English

This position will be filled by a candidate with experience teaching First-Year Writing courses and English majors’ courses, particularly Professional and Technical Writing and Professional Editing, both in face-to-face and online teaching environments. The candidate will also be expected to teach graduate courses in writing. Currently the department supports multiple programs including an undergraduate degree in English with emplases in writing, literature, or education. The department also staffs basic English courses and offers courses in two graduate degree programs.


  • An earned Ph.D. in English with an emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition, preferably specializing in professional and technical writing and editing. ABD candidates with a firm dissertation defense date may be considered.
  • A record of excellent college teaching.
  • Evidence of successful experience teaching both Professional and Technical Writing and Professional Editing.
  • Record of successful experience teaching First-Year Writing courses.
  • Experience teaching online.
  • Evidence of scholarly presentation and publication potential
  • Knowledge of the application of technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.


  • Teach undergraduate First-Year Writing courses, English majors’ courses, and graduate courses.
  • Teach online. 
  • Engage in scholarly activities leading to grants, presentations, and publications.
  • Participate in student advising and committee service to the department, college, university, and community.
