Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, healthcare, and service, is seeking applicants for the Department Chair position in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering of Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology. The department is seeking a dynamic and vision-directed leader in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field with an established record of excellence in engineering education, research and service.
Parks College offers academic programs of excellence that integrate the education of the whole person, with classroom and laboratory experiences in the major field of study. Experiential education and graduate/undergraduate research, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship are hallmarks of the student learning experience at the college. The graduate program offering masters and doctoral programs in engineering and aviation started in Fall 2010 and currently has 80 MS and Ph.D. students. Parks College has made a long-term commitment to a research-led profile while maintaining and enhancing our long-established excellence in engineering and aviation education. The college is strategically adding key senior and junior faculty including a new Dean who started in September of 2012.
The Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. The department has current enrollment of around 300 undergraduate students, 30 MS and Ph.D. students, and 13 full time faculty. Areas of research strength are in: thermofluids; aerodynamics; space systems; innovation, design and entrepreneurship; energy; mechanics and manufacturing. The department has close collaborations with local and national industry and government establishments and is the dominant aerospace and mechanical engineering program in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
The new Chair of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering will be the academic leader responsible for management, guidance, and advancement both within the department and with external constituencies. The Chair will be instrumental in the enhancement of existing undergraduate and graduate programs and funded research, as well as advancement of the department's professional/industrial, government, alumni and development relations. The Chair will work closely with the Dean of the College in achieving the strategic objectives set forth by the College and the University. In addition to the Chair, the Department currently has one additional tenured or tenure-track faculty position open with the possibility of future faculty additions.
Required Qualifications: An earned doctorate in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field and a record of academic accomplishment meriting appointment as a tenured full professor are required. Candidates must have evidence of excellence in education and a strong record of scholarly and funded research. S/he must have a demonstrated record of leadership, management, and communication abilities, and working with industry.
