Detailed Job Description

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the Department of Languages Chair, and the Dean of School of Humanities, Arts and Social Science, designs and teaches an equivalent of 12 credit hours of Spanish courses per semester in a variety of learning environments and activities that provide opportunities for students to develop to their fullest potential and achieve their learning objectives. Supports and seeks always to fulfill the guiding concepts for the university which are embodied in UVU's Mission.
Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
-Plans, prepares and follows an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught.
-Prepares instructional materials, including examinations, course outlines, syllabi, visual aids and presentations.
-Instructs, manages and supervises individuals and groups through lecturers, discussions, conferences, demonstrations, field trips, individualized instruction, and other appropriate methods.
-Evaluates instruction and learning through use of written, oral and performance tests.
-Maintains a student oriented approach to education.
-Recommends students for advancement and graduation.
-Maintains and submits accurate and current reports and records regarding student accountability, attendance, performance, and follow-up.
-Establishes and maintains regular office hours and advises students during office hours and well as at other times as needed.
-Assists advisers, department chair, faculty and department staff in maintaining an effective program.
-Improves professionally and maintains currency in the courses taught and desirable classroom conditions.
-Promotes diversity on campus by serving on relevant committees, developing curriculum, and participating in relevant programs.
-Actively engages students in lectures, discussion, and laboratories.
-Fosters and engages in collegial relations with the community.  

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a Doctoral Degree in Spanish. Three years minimum successful experience teaching Spanish Language at both lower and upper division college levels and/or extensive experience in the field of Spanish/English Translation and Interpretation.
Oral and writing proficiency in Spanish and English at an Advanced High or Superior rating according to the American Council Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale.  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

-Knowledge of principles and methodologies of language learning and teaching of subject matter and course content.
-Knowledge of curriculum development, program development and evaluation.
-Knowledge of and willingness to direct international study programs.
-Skills in effective human relations and communication techniques.
-Skills in counseling, advising techniques and interpersonal communication.
-Skills in public speaking and writing with a variety of individuals and groups.
-Ability to do appropriate field study to stay current with the latest issues in the field of -Hispanic affairs and culture.
-Ability to promote and recruit students.
-Ability to motivate, manage, and evaluate students and work effectively with people.
-Ability to follow written and oral procedures and instructions.  

Selective Placement Factors

Preferred areas of emphasis include Translation and Interpretation, Spanish for the Professions, or Pedagogy.
