Detailed Job Description

This position will report to the senior director of the Center for Student Engagement. Oversee the daily operation of science tutoring.

Duties & Responsibilities

Major responsibilities will be to (1) Oversee the daily operation of the SJC Science Tutoring Center;
(2) ) Coordinate with tutoring center team, student tutors, and faculty to promote continuous program improvement informed by program data; (3) Work directly with faculty and visit classes to align tutoring procedures with classroom curriculum and promote tutoring services; (4) Process to hire science tutors in accordance with SJC employment and work study policies; and is responsible to supervise all science tutors. (5) Provide direct individual and group tutoring, supplemental instruction, and special topics workshops to students in science and science-related disciplines; (6) Develop and provide science content training and curriculum for tutors that meet College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification requirements; and (7) Serve on various college committees as appropriate. May oversee all tutoring operations in the absence of the senior director. Perform other related duties as assigned by the senior director.


Bachelor’s degree in science is required with a background in chemistry and biology preferred. Master’s degree in science is preferred Two year’s work experience with instruction or tutoring including: supervision of staff and program development are required. CRLA or Supplemental Instruction certification or experience is preferred. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to effectively establish rapport with students, tutors, and faculty members and market program services. Effective organizational and administrative skills are essential. Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative work environment. This is a busy, high-energy work environment with limited privacy and frequent interruptions, so tolerance for these conditions and the ability to multi-task are essential.
