Detailed Job Description

Under the direction of the Department Chair and the Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social sciences, the assistant professor - Speech Communication will teach a full load of courses, develop curriculum, and serve on committees.
Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
-Teach courses in Speech Communication while maintaining a student-oriented approach to education. Probable teaching areas include research methods, communication theory, health communication, organizational communication, environmental communication, interpersonal communication, public speaking, and supervision of the public speaking lab and train teaching assistants.
-Plan, prepare, and follow an approved course of study that includes measurable objectives for each course taught. Prepare instructional materials.
-Instruct, manage, and supervise individuals and groups in classrooms and laboratories by the following methods: demonstration, discussion, visual aids, lectures, field trips, individualized instruction, on line instruction, and other appropriate instructional methods.
-Evaluate instruction and learning by means of written, oral, practical, and performance tests.
-Assist in recruitment, advisement, placement, and follow-up of students.
-Recommend students for advancement and graduation.
-Maintain and submit accurate and current reports and records involving student accountability, attendance, performance, and follow-up.
-Establish and maintain office hours and advise students during this time and at other times as needed.
-Assist advisor, department chairperson, faculty, and department staff in maintaining an effective program and serving on committees and attending meetings as required.
-Perform miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Ph.D. (or ABD) in speech communication with demonstrated ability teaching theoretical and skills-based courses in speech communication.  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

-Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated competence in Speech Communication.
Skills & Abilities:
-Demonstrate experience in and willingness to provide expert classroom instruction, curriculum development, and program assessment.
-Service to the department and college through shared faculty governance, including departmental and school-wide committees.
-Research skills demonstrated through presentation of research at refereed conferences or publications in academic journals and/or books.

- Preferred Qualifications: An ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in conducting speech communication research and/or service and outreach that connects the discipline to the local community.
