Include teaching classes in biology for biology majors, human biology, life science, human anatomy, human physiology, and microbiology; teaching extended day and evening classes as assigned; serving on college and district committees; performing peer evaluations; preparing Program Review reports; conducting Student Learning Outcome assessments and analyzing the assessments; and otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required.
NOTE: Preparation of orders for supplies and equipment for laboratory exercises is expected. The Instructor is expected to work with other Instructors and the Instructional Technician to ensure labs are properly prepared and a safe teaching environment is maintained.
Include a master’s degree in any biological science; OR bachelor’s degree in any biological science AND master’s degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science; OR a valid California Community College Credential; OR the equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency); AND demonstrated sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Include the extent of background and teaching experience in life science, general education biology, biology for biology majors, human anatomy and physiology, and microbiology; demonstrated knowledge of current chemical and hazardous materials safety procedures; extent and experience in diagnosing and remediating knowledge and skills deficiencies; extent of experience with educational technology (computer, interactive video, slides, etc.); ability to introduce and develop new technologies to department such as online learning and personal response systems; extent of working with students of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff; and, extent of related work and professional experience and potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth.
Conditions of Employment: 177 duty days per year.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is $51,992 – $78,276 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $1,945 is available. In addition, the district offers an attractive fringe benefit package including health, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance for employees. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).
Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates that meet the highest degree of desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview.
The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services and Campus President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the Campus President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
