Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care, and service, seeks applicants for the department chair position in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology, starting August 2013.
Started in 1997, the Biomedical Engineering department provides academic programs of excellence that integrate the education of the whole person, in the liberal and Jesuit traditions, with classroom and laboratory experiences. An emphasis on laboratory coursework and research are hallmarks of the student learning experience. The department offers ABET accredited bachelor degree program in Biomedical Engineering and offers masters and doctoral degree programs. Currently, the faculty members in the department are engaged in research related to Tissue Engineering, Biomaterials, Bio Sensors, Biomedical Signal Processing, Modeling and Electrophysiology, and Orthopedic and Cardiovascular Biomechanics. Some of the research is funded by NIH and NSF grants.
In the last few years, Parks College has made a long-term commitment to raising its research profile while maintaining and enhancing excellence in engineering education. These plans are well under way with several strategic additions of key senior and junior faculty, including a new Dean who will start in September of 2012. The candidate for the Chair of Biomedical Engineering is expected to be an accomplished scholar in a research field compatible with contemporary research directions in biomedical engineering, with record of publications and research funding that merits an appointment of full professor with tenure.
The next chair of the department in Biomedical Engineering will be the department's academic leader responsible for all aspects of management, leadership, and advancement both within the department and with outside external constituencies. The chair will be instrumental in the enhancement of existing programs and the further development of graduate education and funded research along with the advancement of the department's professional/industrial, government and alumni relations. The chair will work closely with the Dean of the college in achieving the strategic research objectives set forth by the college and the university. Excellent opportunities abound for collaborative partnership/research with the Doisy College of health Sciences and School of Medicine at Saint Louis University. The successful candidate must have proven leadership and communication skills and demonstrate a high level of energy and creativity. An earned doctorate in Biomedical engineering or related field and a record of academic accomplishment meriting appointment as a tenured full professor are required.
