Mathematics Learning Center Coordinator
( Full Time, Tenure Track, Spring or Fall 2014)

SALARY: $50,921.00 - $69,050.00 Annually

The Monterey Peninsula College Mathematics Learning Center (MLC) provides drop-in tutoring for students in all levels of MPC’s math program from arithmetic to calculus, as well as providing math support to students in science classes. The MLC coordinator position is intended to better meet the growing needs of MPC students and provide expanded support for students in evening and online programs, as well as at the Education Center at Marina.

As a full time math faculty member in the Physical Science Division, the successful candidate’s duties will include, but not limited to:

• Provide leadership for the MLC.
• Direct and oversee all activities of the MLC at the Monterey campus and Marina site.
• Use and develop a variety of effective tutoring methods to engage student interest and support a variety of learning styles.
• Hire, train, and supervise all student tutors and other support staff.
• Work with math faculty to develop new curriculum and revise existing curriculum.
• Promote the MLC services to all math and science students.
• Review and revise the MLC policies practices and procedures to ensure compliance with Title 5 and the Education Code.
• Assist students in the use of technology.
• Provide direct math tutoring support to students in math and science courses.
• Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines.
• Implement a continuous improvement model that includes collecting and analyzing data to ensure the center is meeting student need.
• Create and communicate policies and procedures for proctored make-up tests in the MLC. Attend division meetings.
• Participate in faculty and staff recruitments.
• Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance committees and campus life activities.
• Communicate to and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college- wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department.
• Continue professional development and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops, and other appropriate means.
• Perform other duties as described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the MPCTA Contract, and as assigned at the Monterey campus, the Education Center at Marina, and/or other designated locations.
• As a member of the Basic Skills Initiative Committee, the MLC Coordinator will cooperate with other instructional support programs to promote collaboration and integration of services to enhance student success and retention.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s Degree in mathematics or applied mathematics;
OR
• Bachelor’s degree in either of the above AND a Master’s degree in statistics, physics, or mathematics education;
OR
• Possession of a California Community College Teaching Credential (valid for life) in Mathematics;
OR
• The equivalent. Desirable Qualifications

1. A significant number of graduate level mathematics courses.
2. Demonstrated ability to clearly explain concepts in the full range of math and statistics
courses taught at MPC.
3. Demonstrated ability to clearly explain to students how math is used in real world
situations, such as science, engineering, and business.
4. Demonstrated ability to supervise others.
5. Successful administrative and/or program management experience.
6. Recent successful tutoring and/or teaching experience in mathematics.
7. Demonstrated ability to use a variety of mathematics and general computer software
applications with proficiency.
8. Ability to develop and communicate a long-term vision for the role of the MLC in
supporting student success.
9. Recent successful experience coordinating supplemental learning programs.
Commitment to community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non- traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.

Starting at $51,971-70,474 annually, based on documented education and experience.
In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate can also earn a Doctoral stipend of $2,850 or a multiple Masters’ stipend of $2,021, if applicable. In addition, the District provides an excellent fringe benefits package, including paid medical and dental coverage for employees and dependents, and a vision plan, life insurance and long-term disability benefits for the employee only. Retirement is the State Teachers’ Retirement System. Participation in tax deferred plans are available.

The assigned work year is 175.5 days per academic year. The assignment will include a minimum of 35 scheduled hours per week. The position is available beginning January 29, 2014, however a Fall 2014 starting date would be agreeable, if necessary.
