Associate Director of Sustainability

The University of Virginia is pleased to invite candidates for the position of Associate Director of Sustainability. This position will transform the existing sustainability initiatives while supporting UVA’s objective to provide sustainable, economic and reliable energy, utilities and recycling services and programs to the entire University. By building and maintaining strong connections across grounds, the candidate will be responsible for leading energy management initiatives, sustainability outreach teams and recycling initiatives across the University. Additionally, he/she must also insure that all new, renovated, historical, and other existing facilities operate in accordance with the University sustainability goals as resolved by its Board of Visitors.

The successful candidate will have superior leadership and communication skills with experience providing administrative and technical direction in the areas of energy efficiency and sustainability programs. The candidate will have a passion for sustainability and will drive to create an innovative vision to make significant change. He/she will have proven ability to effectively lead teams, build consensus and manage multiple programs is expected.

  • Considerable knowledge of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and/or recycling programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate to prepare energy use forecasts, and accomplish life cycle cost analyses to determine payback period for new and renovated buildings.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively build collaboration across a complex organization, lead teams and manage multiple programs is required.
  • Experience in educational, research, and/or health care facilities, infrastructure, or systems preferred.
  • Proven experience managing engineers, developing budgets, schedules and technical criteria for energy projects.
  • A degree in engineering, architecture, planning, environmental or related field is required.
  • Certification in Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) is a plus.
