DEAN, COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES
Oberlin College invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (the College). Oberlin is seeking a leader who is passionate about liberal arts education and who shares Oberlin’s values – a commitment to social justice, equity and environmental sustainability – and who can provide the strategic leadership and imagination to enable the College to continue to foster the intellectual and creative development of its students and prepare them for future success.
The successful candidate will be creative, entrepreneurial and collaborative. S/he will be an accomplished scholar and teacher who has a deep affinity for the liberal arts and for undergraduate education, strong management and fundraising skills, and a consultative disposition suited to an institution where decanal leadership is embedded in faculty governance. The capacity to be an effective advocate and ambassador for the College, both internally and with a wide variety of external audiences, is essential.
The dean will join Oberlin at an exciting time. In September 2012 Oberlin launched the public phase of Oberlin Illuminate, a seven-year comprehensive capital campaign. The campaign will raise funds to support the endowment, increase support for faculty and students, and undertake significant capital projects that will enable Oberlin to continue to offer innovative programs to meet emerging disciplines and maintain its reputation for excellence as a liberal arts college with a world-class conservatory, art museum, and science facilities. In addition, the campaign will raise $20M to support the Oberlin Project, which is part of the Clinton Climate Initiative. This project aims to make Oberlin College and the city carbon neutral, transforming the area and creating a Green Arts District that will revitalize resources for the arts and education and create important new opportunities for student learning.
The dean will work in partnership with President Marvin Krislov and the Dean of the Conservatory, as well as the Oberlin faculty and staff to develop a new long range strategic plan that will build on the initiatives already underway and frame the aspirations and priorities of Oberlin for the future.
