VICE PRESIDENT OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS AND DEAN OF THE COLLEGE
Grinnell College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges, seeks an exceptional vice president of academic affairs and dean of the college. Building on Grinnell’s long-standing excellence in teaching and learning, the dean will have the opportunity to partner with a dynamic and ambitious president and an outstanding faculty to re-envision Grinnell’s leadership role in liberal arts education in the 21st century.
Grinnell College is a highly selective, private, residential liberal arts college widely recognized for its rigorous curriculum and strong tradition of social engagement. Founded in 1846, Grinnell enrolls 1,600 students generally from all states and about 50 countries in 26 major fields and 11 interdisciplinary concentrations. Among the nation’s small liberal arts colleges, Grinnell is widely viewed as an institution of the first rank, with an excellent faculty, a consistently strong and increasingly diverse student body, a well-equipped and beautiful campus, and a strong financial position.
The college began a strategic planning process in fall 2011 that has established ambitious goals in all facets of operations. In the academic realm, these goals include creating an adaptive curriculum and pedagogy that will evolve in response to new and unanticipated challenges; expanding interdisciplinary efforts; introducing new educational opportunities that give students more direct experience with the creation, interpretation, and application of knowledge; making optimal use of the mentoring provided by the college’s residential life and sense of community; and attracting and retaining the best faculty and students in the country. The vice president for academic affairs will guide these strategic initiatives.
The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher and scholar with a deep belief in the importance of a liberal arts education. S/he must be well-informed about new approaches in pedagogy and dedicated to continual improvement of the learning experience at Grinnell. This vice president must have the ability to oversee a complex set of academic programs and functions and be able to develop, delegate to, and lead teams toward the achievement of goals. S/he will work in collaboration with the president, the vice president for finance, and the vice president for planning to develop the college’s budget and will be able to take responsibility for the functioning of the college in the president’s absence.
