The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah State University is seeking candidates for a Senior Associate Dean position beginning in the summer or fall of 2013. The position is a 12-month, full-time administrative position with tenure if appropriate, in a department in the college. This position requires a Ph.D. and a successful history of teaching excellence; scholarly/professional productivity; and service to the college, university or at the departmental level. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of leadership and success in the academic context. The role of senior associate dean is one of the most important academic leadership positions at Utah State University. It is an integral interface between faculty and administration. The role of senior associate dean has two primary over-arching dimensions. First, associate deans have the responsibility to oversee and manage a wide range of special initiatives and projects in the college. Second, associate deans participate in the executive management of their college and, as such, have a responsibility to contribute to the overall success of their college.
This assignment requires an experienced and collegial administrator and manager who can collaborate effectively with administration, faculty and staff in decision-making, and focus on building a strong foundation for the college to assure student and faculty success. The successful candidate will share the vision of the college and believe in the future of Liberal Arts in a Land Grant University.

USU’s main campus is located in Logan, Utah. Logan is located in a picturesque mountain valley with a population of over 100,000, about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City. Ski resorts, lakes, rivers, and mountains in the area make it one of the finest outdoor recreation environments in the nation. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is home to six academic departments, five non-departmental programs, a research center, two research labs, and two support units.
Formal review begins July 15, 2013, and will continue until a suitable candidate is selected.
The college is seeking a Senior Associate Dean whose skills, experience, and commitment will ensure excellence in specific management areas of the college. These areas include:
1) Monitor and provide training related to tenure and promotion at all levels;
2) Serve as liaison with the Provost’s Office with respect to tenure and promotion processes and code;
3) Serve as a member of the Dean’s Leadership Team providing input into college policies;
4) Facilitate continued dialogue to create and enhance pathways for students through college majors;
5) Chair various committees within the college including the selection committees for scholarships and awards;
6) Oversee special projects and associated funding;
7) Serve as College representative on various academic/curriculum committees as needed;
8) Serve as the College liaison for students; student ambassadors; and student senator;
9) Represent CHaSS at events both on and off-campus to constituents and external stakeholders;
10) Serve in other administrative capacities as assigned.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. and be tenured at the level of professor or meet all requirements to be tenured at the level of professor at USU including a strong record of academic achievement, and a record of accomplished teaching.
The successful candidate must satisfactorily pass a background check prior to hire.
Must also be able to demonstrate the following:
1) The ability to provide leadership while building trust and consensus among faculty;
2) The ability to function as an advocate for the college and its departments/programs;
3) Advise the dean as a member of the executive team.
Demonstrated successful experience in administration.
