PART-TIME TECHNICAL ASSISTANT III: WRITING CENTER TUTOR:
Position is located in the NECC Tutoring Center and reports to the Coordinator of Learning Resources. May be required to work at both Haverhill and Lawrence campuses, days and/or evenings; flexibility in scheduling required. Approximately 25 hours per week, Sept.-May; reduced hours June-Sept. Total hours not to exceed 850 per year. One-year appointment for academic year 2013-2014. Anticipated start date: August 12, 2013.
Primary focus is to provide ongoing tutoring to students in developmental-writing and college-level courses. This involves assisting students in developing and writing for assigned research papers and other projects in both writing and content-area courses. Students will receive help with specific developmental-writing assignments, as well as with developing thesis statements, organizing research (web-based and traditional), thinking critically, drafting, citing sources, and polishing a final draft. Provides assistance and supports staff with writing-related tutoring activities and services. Maintains records and resources for writing tutoring. Responsible for other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree required; degree in English or composition/rhetoric preferred. Must have experience tutoring or conferencing one-on-one with college-level students on writing projects. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Sensitivity to the needs of non-traditional, multi-cultural, and/or educationally disadvantaged students. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications with the ability to use and assist students with Microsoft Word and personal computer as a writing tool. Familiarity with current composition theory and online learning environments preferred.
Salary range: $19.04 - $26.76 per hour, no fringe benefits.
