This position is responsible for video productions for the Washington State University Spokane campus. This position is responsible for productions from concept to finished product.
This position will research and conceptualize productions in collaboration with the Communications office and the colleges/departments requesting the production. The videographer is also responsible for developing production schedules, researching site locations, production set-up, and ensuring that all releases, permits, and paperwork are available before production begins.
This position ensures that high-quality video and audio is collected and that all productions are edited to the highest quality and meet the University’s brand standards.
This position will shoot video at various events and locations and will require travel and occasional irregular hours (evenings and weekends).
A Bachelor’s degree in broadcast communications or a related field and two (2) years of professional level experience in areas such as editing and producing audio and/or video for various types of media; writing feature and promotional copy; and operating video cameras. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Excellent interviewing skills with a knack for drawing people out in conversation.
Skilled in story development and concept refinement. Able to take complex stories and communicate them in simple, easy-to-follow terms.
Ability to coordinate complex schedules (e.g., coordinate multiple interview subjects with production crew) in order to maximize efficient use of production time.
Experience taking photos with a digital camera.
Pre-Production – 35%
Researches sources for playing the produced videos. Collaborates with cable stations throughout Washington state. Researches feasibility of having a WSU Health Sciences channel. Develops and maintains pricing lists for airtime purchases.
Collaborates with all areas of WSU Spokane to determine the videography needs. Attends production planning meetings.
Develops production concepts. Assists colleges and departments with creating and developing ideas. Advises colleges and departments about the feasibility of ideas and concepts.
Drafts and creates storyboards for each production. Creates a production plan and timelines for each shoot. Writes script as needed.
Coordinates production scheduling, including planning and arranging travel, moving equipment to locations, and coordinating schedules with interview subjects.
Scouts site locations and obtains all necessary permits and paperwork prior to productions.
Produces video of the WSU Spokane Health Sciences campus and video of WSU Health Sciences programs that are located on campuses throughout the state.
Production – 30%
Collaborates with Communications staff during production.
Shoots high-quality/marketing-quality video to the specifications of the college or department.
Captures high-quality/marketing-quality audio during production.
Provides site management. Ensures that all equipment is transported to the locations. Manages the set, ensures that all needed lighting and props are set-up prior to the start of production.
Collaborates with Communications staff to ensure that all release forms are collected from the participants/actors.
Provides production up-dates to departments. Addresses production issues as they arise.
Tracks costs and expenses for each shoot. Reconciles budget expenditures in collaboration with the Finance office.
Post-Production/Editing – 30%
Edits videos to the highest production standards and according to the client’s needs. Ensures that all productions meet the University’s brand standards.
Ensures that all productions are finished according to storyboards and concepts.
Shoots additional footage as needed.
Tracks and logs all video that is shot so that others can easily access and use footage.
Schedules airings on various television channels and uploads finished product to WSU owned websites and social media accounts.
Other – 5%
