The Department of Art and Art History invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor in Art Education.


The Art and Art History Department of Saint Mary’s College of California, is seeking an artist/teacher/scholar in traditional studio art practices (painting and drawing) with research interests in community-based art education or art practices for marginal populations. The candidate will be expected to enhance work already underway with partner schools and community groups, and develop innovative research in both theory and practice of art. The individual chosen for this position will be expected to teach undergraduate traditional studio art courses as well as new cross-disciplinary arts education courses. Other duties will include supervising student exhibitions and overseeing the student gallery, reviewing and updating the department’s existing studio curriculum, advising majors on their matriculation planning, and participating in department meetings and activities as well as college-wide service opportunities. Beyond teaching within the Art and Art History Department, the successful candidate should also expect to participate in the Collegiate Seminar Great Books and January Term programs. As a basic component of his or her work at Saint Mary’s, the new faculty hire will be expected to contribute to the mission of the College, which is informed, animated and expressed through its Catholic, Lasallian and Liberal Arts traditions.

Experience and Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., Ed.D. or D.A. degree in art education. The successful candidate will show an established record with experience and excellence both as studio practitioner and as committed educator, evidence of promise in research and/or artistic scholarly achievement, and professional experience or publication in the field. Preference will be given to applicants with an undergraduate degree in studio art as well as experience teaching culturally and economically diverse populations.
