The position is defined as approximately 75% research/graduate education and 25% teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a productive, extramurally funded research program in the area of infectious diseases/immunology. Candidates with a research emphasis in food-, water-, or vector-borne diseases are especially encouraged to apply. As a faculty member the successful candidate will be expected to establish effective collaborations with current WSU programs and be active in the department’s graduate program, including mentoring graduate students and serving as a member of student advisory committees. The successful candidate will also be expected to be active in the academic service arena. Responsibilities include teaching the 3 credit Veterinary Immunology course in the professional veterinary medicine curriculum. The course is one of the core offerings of the department and is taught in a clinically relevant context. The successful candidate will seek to excel in his/her teaching and will interact closely and effectively with other teaching faculty in the department, and be actively involved in the Department’s collaborative teaching efforts. The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology seeks candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.
A PhD degree in biomedical science or related field is required. At the Assistant Professor level, evidence of 36 months of productive post-doctoral research experience is required. At the Associate / Full Professor level, evidence of an established extramurally funded research program, a record of successful collaboration, and proven track record of graduate education is required. The research area should be compatible with the departmental research focus on infectious diseases. Areas of emphasis include immunology, food- and water-borne diseases, and vector-borne diseases. Candidates at all ranks must have demonstrated abilities in conducting hypothesis-based research and publishing high quality papers in top tier journals; a track record of, or strong potential for attracting extramural funding, and a history or interest in contributing to high quality veterinary and graduate education.
Candidates that hold a DVM (or equivalent) degree are highly desirable.
DEPARTMENT: The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology is one of five departments/schools in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The departmental mission is “to enhance animal and public health through teaching veterinary and graduate students, training veterinary pathology and microbiology residents, and conducting biomedical research in infectious diseases/immunology”. The department takes pride in what we believe is an environment that fosters collaboration, creativity, personal and professional growth, and productivity. Although few faculty members are personally involved in all the traditional missions of teaching, research, and service, we value and seek excellence in all three.
The personnel of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, the USDA-ARS-Animal Disease Research Unit, the School for Global Animal Health, and the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory are housed together in the College of Veterinary Medicine. There are many productive interactions among the individuals in the four units and many faculty members have appointments in multiple units. There are congruencies of interests and fruitful collaborations among the faculty and personnel in these four units, and aside from some unit-specific responsibilities, it is an overarching cohesive organization. Our aim and our expectation is that to the degree possible, the programs of the four units will function seamlessly.
