The International Student Advisor provides advisement, liaison, and support services to assist international students in achieving their educational goals. The incumbent provides professional guidance to students and their families on highly complex U.S. government regulations related to non-immigrant visas under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Duties include interpreting and applying federal regulations advising, and ensuring compliance related to work authorization, travel/re-entry, course load requirements, visa adjustments; performing event based reporting in SEVIS, monitoring, reviewing and issuing student records; and authorizing immigration benefits such as school transfer. The incumbent also provides advisement and/or referrals on personal concerns such as financial, legal, academic, social mores/culture etc.
Positions require a Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis.
Previous experience with federal immigration regulations and procedures related to F-1/J-1 student status and evaluation of compliance issues.
Master’s Degree in relevant field.
Foreign language competency and overseas study or living experience, including ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Experience organizing and planning education and social programs and presentations for students.
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that demonstrate an ability to contribute to team efforts.
