Detailed Job Description

This position is responsible for directing the college’s Cosmetology program.

Instructional duties will comprise approximately 60% of this position and Coordinator duties will comprise approximately 40% of the position.

Duties & Responsibilities


• Teaches classes; presents lectures and labs; conducts training sessions to teach and demonstrate principles, techniques, procedures or methods; develops tests for practical and theory classes; observes and evaluates student work to determine progress, provide feedback, and makes suggestions for improvement.

• Develops course curriculum; plans course content, syllabi, and methods of instruction; determines student training needs; prepares outlines of instructional programs and training schedules; establishes course goals; selects books, materials, and supplies.

• Develops course schedules.

• Advises and counsels program students in matters related to academic and career goals.

• Resolves student disciplinary problems.

• Maintains student records; records grades and attendance.

• Prepares annual budget requests; balances and appropriates funds.

• Maintains equipment and supply inventory; makes purchases as needed.

• Supervises the work of program instructors; ensures that instructors have needed materials and equipment.

• Serves on assigned college committees.

• Performs related duties.


• Knowledge of cosmetology, barbering, nail technology and aesthetics.

• Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the cosmetology profession.

The Dean, School of Trades and Technology assigns work in terms of program goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of program activities.


Guidelines include Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists guidelines and program and college policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. This position develops program guidelines.


• The work consists of varied instructional, management and supervisory duties. The variety of tasks to be managed contributes to the complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is to direct the Cosmetology program. Success in this position results in the efficient and effective provision of instruction to students and to compliance with accreditation standards.


• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, vendors, shop owners, and members of the general public.

• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, to negotiate or settle matters, or to motivate or influence persons.


• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

• The work is typically performed in an office or classroom. The employee may be exposed to irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.


This position has direct supervision over program faculty.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service. • Must hold or be able to obtain a New Mexico Barber and Cosmetology License. • Must hold or be able to obtain a New Mexico Barber and Cosmetology Instructor License
