Under the supervision of the Director of the Access Center, the Accessibility Technology Specialist is responsible for ensuring the department’s accessible technology policies and procedures are strictly followed to ensure full institutional compliance with ADA and Section 504 standards. The incumbent provides Access Center students with consultative support and services in the use of accessible technology. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the alternative text production program. Collaborates with information technology staff to ensure campus computer labs are accessible with proper technology and equipment. The incumbent collaborates with Accessibility Coordinators and students with disabilities to assess accessible technology needs including hardware, software and special equipment for course access. The incumbent is also responsible for developing and providing training workshops and resource materials for faculty to help ensure their course materials are accessible.
Program Management: (60%) Enforces department’s accessible technology policies and procedures to ensure full compliance with ADA and Section 504 standards. Manages, orders and tracks materials for conversion to accessible formats. Determines appropriate accessible technology support services for students based on interactive meeting. Provides students with consultative support and services on the use of accessible software and hardware. Coordinates with Information Technology Services in installation, placement, maintenance and upgrade of adaptive technology on university’s computers labs. Collaborates with the Educational Technology Center staff to keep abreast of current technology used to support accessible web education operations. Consults with professional colleagues throughout the university in strategic planning/shared responsibility for timely availability of equitable access to informational materials/technology by students with disabilities. Coordinates effectively with other departmental staff in developing innovative programs and services for students with disabilities. Generates statistical data to ensure ADA compliance. Maintains program website.
Training: (20%) Develops training modules and trainings for students regarding accessible technology applications. Provides workshops/presentations on accessible technology applications to campus-wide programs. Develops training modules and resources and provides training workshops to faculty on creating accessible instructional materials.
Supervision: (10%) Recruits, trains, supervises, evaluates student support staff.
D.) Professional Development (5%): Continually researches, analyzes and makes recommendations on emerging technologies that can assist students with disabilities. Attends professional conferences, workshops, seminars, training sessions and/or professional organizational meetings.
E.) Other duties as assigned (5%): This list of essential duties, tasks and responsibilities is not all-inclusive; individual will perform other related duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
• Two years’ experience with accessible technology software (i.e. JAWS, ZoomText, Read&Write Gold, Dragon)
• Two years’ experience working with students with disabilities
• Demonstrated professional experience providing trainings/workshops/presentations.
• Previous experience in a position that required managing production of alternative format text materials.
• Experience providing services and accommodations in compliance with federal regulations.
• Experience collecting and analyzing statistical data
• Completion of work duties in a previous position that involved experience with Abby, Tiger embosser, Juliet Brailler, Access Text Network, Read& Write Gold. Zoom Text, JAWS, Microsoft 365 and Adobe Pro.
• Previous supervisory experience
• Experience with both Mac and PC platforms
• Experience consulting with and providing training to faculty
