Detailed Job Description
The Academic Advisor I is an entry level advising position. Under direct supervision, the Advisor I will be engaged in academic advising activities that support UA at the institution or college level.
Additional Department Summary:
The Coordinator of International Student Advising manages the international student advising and program liaison functions of the College and the Asa H. Bean Student Services Center. The incumbent is responsible for managing all international student advising processes including the development of an academic plan, teaching a freshmen level orientation and study skills course. The incumbent is also responsible for serving as liaison for the Capstone International Academic Program departmental information dissemination. The incumbent in this position is also responsible for providing direct advising services to other students in the college.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and some relevant experience. Student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student oriented experience will be considered.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications:
THIS POSITION REQUIRES a Master's degree in education, adult/continuing education or related field and two years of work experience in a student services environment, academic advising, counseling or teaching, preferably in higher education, OR a Master's degree in an unrelated field and three years or more of work experience in a student services environment, academic advising, counseling or teaching, preferably in higher education. All But Dissertation or Doctoral degree, or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience in which comparable skills and abilities have been attained. Good oral and written communications skills, along with good organizational skills required. Requires basic knowledge in the usage of personal computers, including word processing. Ability to coordinate faculty/course development, as well as teach courses. This position requires a master's degree. The incumbent must be thoroughly knowledgeable of College degree programs, degree requirements, documentation, and the information systems that support academic student services. The incumbent must be professionally active and current on best practices in international advising and other programs promoting student success and retention of international students who choose to study business at The University of Alabama. The incumbent must possess excellent abilities to work with others, must have an understanding of the higher education environment. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.
Skills and Knowledge:
Foster new and maintain current relationships with study abroad programs for the purpose of enhancing the College. This is to include academic advising, recruitment, and coordinating responsibilities with international academic programs. Act as primary point of contact for all Culverhouse undergraduate international students; freshman, transfer and exchange. Incumbent will teach a one credit hour course required for first year Culverhouse students.
Experience working with international students, international programs, study abroad, domestic and international exchange programs. 56 Monthly (exempt): - Minimum - $ 29120.04 Midpoint - $ 40767.96
