Detailed Job Description

Pomona College was established in 1887 on a campus designed to recreate the best of the eastern Ivy League universities, while at the same time offering the beautiful Southern California lifestyle. Located in Claremont, CA, Pomona has approximately 1,500 undergraduate students and a student to faculty ratio of 8 to 1. Rather than growing beyond our small college roots, we later chose Oxford and Cambridge as our model for founding the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of seven independent institutions on adjoining campuses unlike any other higher education experience in America.

We are continually ranked among the best colleges in the nation on Kiplinger's Personal Finance, The Princeton Review, and the Fiske Guide to Colleges. We inspire our students to take risks and we support them in their mission to make a real difference in the world. We seek to engage and reward our employees who are professionals of the highest caliber and quality, who value our College’s intimate community and historic roots, and who contribute to the ethics, talents and excellence of our administration and faculty in a collaborative environment of equal opportunity, intellectual development, personal growth, and liberal arts education that leads the nation and the world.

The Assistant or Associate Dean for Academic Affairs administers the College’s faculty reappointment, tenure and promotion reviews, oversees recruitment and authorizes hiring of new full-time visiting faculty, and advises department chairs on College policy and procedures.  This position also oversees the College’s faculty professional development funds for teaching, serves on and/or staffs college-wide committees, and oversees about one-quarter of Academic Affairs department and program budgets.  Additional areas of responsibility include serving as liaison to Information Technology Services, editing the Faculty Handbook, approving grade change requests, and awarding academic staff grants.  This position is responsible for the direction and executive oversight of 2 employees and all of the activities and services provided by them for the Office of the VP and Dean of the College. This position also works with the Dean on strategic planning and management of Academic Affairs.

Ph.D. in an academic field or its equivalent is required.  A minimum of 5 years’ experience with increasing responsibility in higher education is expected. Rank of Assistant or Associate would be based in experience.   Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent oral, written, interpersonal, reading, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of employees.  Must also assist and communicate well with parents, students, alumni, volunteers, community partners, and other possible stakeholders.  Experience using  basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software such as Adobe, internet research and menu-driven databases.  Handle all activities and highly confidential and sensitive information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.  Experience with organizational, budget development and analysis experience is required.
