Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Provost leads a team of six and provides support to the Provost, deans, department chairs and faculty on academic personnel matters.  The Assistant Provost works collaboratively on faculty and academic staff recruitment, appointment, employee relations, compensation, performance evaluation, and conflict resolution.  The Assistant Provost also serves as a subject matter expert in interpreting and developing faculty personnel policies and procedures.

The Assistant Provost must demonstrate respect for all employees and for shared-governance processes.  The Assistant Provost must respect Miami’s history, traditions and culture while challenging Academic Personnel Services to be more nimble, and move quickly and efficiently.  The Assistant Provost must interact effectively with a diverse community of faculty and academic administrators using diplomacy, tact and flexibility in various circumstances, and build collaborative relationships with administrators in the Office of Human Resources, Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity, and other University support functions.

The Assistant Provost must make informed and sound decisions based on data and statistics as well as an understanding of the University and its culture.  To adapt successfully to the Miami culture, the Assistant Provost will need to build collaborative relationships across the University and should possess the following attributes:

This is a highly visible position and the Assistant Provost must understand and respect the requirements of working in a public university environment.

The Assistant Provost reports to the Provost & Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.  The Office of Academic Personnel Services provides support to the Provost, deans, department chairs and faculty on academic affairs and academic personnel matters.

With support of a staff of six, the Assistant Provost assists with faculty and academic staff recruitment, on-boarding and retention; processes faculty appointments and evaluations, promotion and tenure, academic staff performance evaluations; and is responsible for leadership training; employee relations; compensation; compliance; leave policies; and conflict resolution.  In addition to the above responsibilities, the Assistant Provost serves as the subject matter expert in developing and interpreting faculty personnel policies and procedures.


The following key objectives have been identified to measure, in part, the Assistant Provost’s performance: 

  • Promote a culture of service within the Academic Personnel function that is focused on the needs of faculty and academic staff, and other constituent groups.
  • Evaluate and, if necessary, restructure the Office of Academic Personnel Services to ensure resources are aligned and positioned to serve the needs of faculty and each academic unit, and is efficient, service oriented and cost effective.
  • Partner with the Office of Human Resources in the integration of policies and process improvements in a manner that preserves the autonomy of the Academic Personnel function while creating a more seamless and efficient system.
  • Develop and oversee a proactive recruitment plan to promote and increase diversity in the University’s faculty and academic staff.
  • Lead a review of faculty and staff compensation, and if necessary, recommend changes to ensure the University is competitive to attract and retain talented, dedicated and diverse faculty and academic staff.
  • Develop and implement a centralized data management system and business intelligence tools to provide meaningful data and reporting to assist the Provost, deans and department chair in management of their academic units.
  • Develop and implement training programs for administrative academic staff and department chairs on the systems used in the Office of Academic Personnel Services to improve efficiencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years of professional experience in higher education administration; or advanced degree with a minimum of three years in higher education administration or related field; and strong quantitative, analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree; knowledgeable of best practices in the administration of academic affairs and personnel services; staff supervision.
