Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care, and service, is seeking applicants for the Dean of the School for Professional Studies (SPS). SPS strives to offer the finest academic and continuing education programs for adult learners and working students in Saint Louis University’s Jesuit tradition of excellence.
The new Dean must understand how to sustain, deliver, support, create, and expand quality academic and continuing education programs in formats that meet the needs of non-traditional students and challenge them to achieve academic excellence.
The SPS Dean reports to the Provost and is a member of the Council of Academic Deans and Directors. As chief academic and administrative officer for all matters relating to the School, the Dean’s responsibilities include program development, and learning outcomes assessment; faculty hiring, mentoring, and development; global relations; marketing and recruitment; student advising and retention; financial management and stewardship; strategic planning; industry board development; and alumni relations. The Dean works in collaboration with the SPS leadership team, which includes three associate deans, academic program chairs, an assistant dean of student services, a business manager, and an executive director of the Center for Workforce and Organizational Development.
SPS enrolls more than 1,500 students in five eight-week terms on the main Saint Louis University campus and at corporate partnership locations. Currently, the School offers graduate degrees, undergraduate degrees, and certificates in a variety of majors. Programs include on-ground and distance education formats. In addition, the Center for Workforce and Organizational Development provides continuing education training and consulting services at the local, regional, and national levels.
Expected Qualifications: Earned doctorate or terminal degree, and academic record to substantiate appointment to senior faculty rank in one of the academic program areas or a related discipline.
Significant academic administrative experience, such as that of a Department Chair, Associate Dean, or Dean. Demonstrated success in teaching, research/scholarship/creative endeavors, and service. Ability to work effectively within a learning community that includes tenure-track, professional-track, and affiliate faculty members. Knowledge of and appreciation for non-traditional students’ unique learning needs, and intercultural competence. Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with all internal and external constituencies regionally, nationally, and internationally. A demonstrated commitment to shared governance, faculty and staff development, and principle-centered leadership. An understanding of critical success factors driving innovative academic and continuing education programs. Knowledge of, and an appreciation for, the online format of offering coursework, in particular in a fast-paced compressed academic term setting.
