Under the direction of the Vice-President of Student Affairs, the Online Counselor facilitates and organizes online processes to provide academic, vocational, athletic, and career counseling to all students. S/he provides leadership for developing online counseling and online advising platforms at the college.
The Counselor provides expertise, initiative and leadership to design online, technology based, solutions and help students to overcome and/or remove whatever factors exist as barriers to their possible success in the areas of academic, vocational or personal achievements and successfully plans for educational or career goals. This assignment may include teaching and/or counseling at other campus sites, day, evening, or weekend assignments, teaching large classes or offering workshops and the ability to use multiple teaching methodologies.


Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling,

OR – The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications for these positions. Candidates who feel they possess such equivalent qualifications must request and submit an APPLICATION FOR EQUIVALENCE form. Supporting documents must be included with the completed form.

(NOTE: A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5, section 53410.1.)

  • Develop and facilitate a comprehensive online counseling system for counseling students and potential students on Bakersfield College‚Äôs admission process, registration, and academic issues. Provide online educational counseling and advisement, career counseling, and testing services to students.
  • Develop and conduct online workshops relevant to student success.
  • Development and implement the usage of online counseling resources including instructional video and multi-media for staff use
  • Maintenance of, and reporting responsibility for, a database of students served and outcome of services
  • Develop and maintain online counseling systems that include but are not limited to a thorough working knowledge of desktop sharing software, and online video chatting.
  • Provide online counseling and matriculation services for students and track potential graduates.
  • Use online technologies for retention and outreach efforts.
  • Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate versatility in instructional methodology and technology and the ability to serve diverse student populations.
  • Post and maintain scheduled office hours.
  • Attend and actively contribute to meetings or activities pertinent to faculty responsibilities or assignments including but not limited to department meetings, advisory committee meetings, and academic senate.
  • Maintain currency in subject matter and developments in the field.


  • Community college counseling experience.
  • Ability and experience in using computer technology for online educational counseling and advisement, career counseling, and testing services to students.
  • Experience with or interest in online and other distance learning student services.
  • Experience in a leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching personal development, counseling and other related areas.
  • Be or become certified to develop and teach courses online using Moodle.
  • Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, including use of advanced technologies like instructional video.
  • Ability to deliver instruction using strategies designed for diverse learning styles.
  • Demonstrated ability to design goals and assess learning outcomes.

Minium Salary

$67,667.18 per year

Maximum Salary

$125,454.24 per year ($88.787.38 maximum entry)
