The Director of Development provides leadership to and management of the planning, execution, and evaluation of fundraising and development related activities both for the WSU Spokane campus and for the major gifts program of the Washington State University Foundation. This will include, but is not limited to, major gift fundraising, actively managing (including personal solicitations) a personal portfolio of campus and state-wide major gift prospects, serving as a liaison for multidisciplinary development efforts between the Spokane campus, other campuses, colleges, and the WSU Foundation, as well as supervising professional development staff and volunteers.
This position will work with the Chancellor and Health Sciences colleges to establish fundraising goals, develop methods to accomplish those goals, and plan and conduct public contact programs designed to promote the public’s understanding of the WSU Spokane campus and the University’s statewide health science education and research programs.
A Bachelor’s degree AND six (6) years of progressively responsible experience which includes three (3) years of full-time professional fund raising experience and at least two (2) years in an institution of higher education. Demonstrated success in proposal writing and submission, evidence of ability to plan and execute a fund drive (i.e. responsibility for a project from conception to realization), demonstrated success in face-to-face solicitations of gifts of $25,000 or more OR comparable experience. Comparable experience includes six (6) years of progressively responsible full-time sales, marketing, public relations, or advancement experience which has involved direct, face-to-face contact with clients, customers, prospective customers and members of the public, program oversight and management, clearly defined goals and objectives and a demonstrated track record of success may be substituted for the experience requirements. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
Advanced degree in a related field (i.e. education, public relations, law, etc.)
Demonstrated success in face-to-face solicitations of gifts of $100,000 or more.
Demonstrated skills in building and managing personal relationships.
Demonstrated follow-through and communication with colleagues and donors.
Demonstrated experience fundraising on a health science campus.
Major Donor Cultivation, Solicitation and Stewardship – 75%
Collaborates with the Chancellor, WSU Foundation and health science colleges to identify, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospects (individuals, corporations and foundations) for priority goals of campus and University units; provide stewardship in recognition of philanthropic gifts.
Key components within this activity include:
1) Strategic Planning: Works with the Chancellor, Foundation and health sciences colleges to identify, define and revise priority needs to be funded through private support. Develops strategic and annual plans that garner private support for defined priorities.
2) Academic Liaison: Promotes an environment for successful fund raising on campus by providing ongoing information for the academic leadership and faculty regarding fund-raising initiatives and by preparing the Chancellor and others to participate effectively in cultivation and solicitation activities.
3) Prospecting and Field Research: Works with volunteers, faculty, and colleagues to identify linkage, ability, and interest of major gifts prospects, including area corporations and foundations.
4) External Relations: Coordinates with the Chancellor and the Director of Communications to develop external relations and communication strategies to meet development objectives. Collaborates on the plans for visits and events that serve to advance the programs of the campus and of the system. Collaborates with campus leadership in advancing external relationship building with all constituencies.
5) University/Foundation Liaison: Serves on the staff of the WSU Foundation and represents the entire University, including WSU Spokane, when meeting friends and alumni of the institution.
Annual Giving – 10%
Oversee strategies for the college’s and campus’ annual giving programs.
Office, Budget, and Personnel Management – 10%
Provides leadership and direction for the development office’s professional and support personnel.
Coordinates the work of campus, college, and Foundation staff located on campus to ensure an organized and unified approach to relationship building.
Defines and plans for needed records and acknowledgement systems support; monitors systems for timelines and effectiveness; and plans, monitors, and manages the unit’s operating budget.
Other – 5%
Other duties as assigned.
