The Department of Chemistry at The University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, AL) seeks a full-time temporary laboratory instructor (9-month appointment; August 16-May 15) beginning August 2016 contingent upon funding and need. Teaching assignments will include oversight of introductory chemistry laboratory sections, including night sections. Assignment to teach lecture courses is possible depending on qualifications of the candidate and department needs. Duties may also include assisting, when needed, with preparation of laboratory materials and equipment for experiments, maintenance of lab material inventories and assisting in the chemistry stockroom. Other duties include setting up and grading examinations, quizzes, and laboratory reports and co-supervising the graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants.
This position is not tenured-track and non-renewable.
M.S. or Ph.D.in chemistry with knowledge of basic techniques in a chemistry laboratory setting including operating knowledge of scientific instrumentation; work experience with computers; ability to interact well with a diverse range of individuals, including students, staff and faculty. Evidence of a commitment to teaching excellence is essential. Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) are required. Experience in the classroom and/or laboratory instruction is preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in an appropriate chemistry discipline.
The applicant will work as a team member in our core undergraduate lab curriculum. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following; Work with the faculty and departmental laboratory coordinator in the development and testing of laboratory experiments, including the coordination of assigned laboratory sections, maintain grades, and perform related duties as assigned. The faculty and laboratory coordinator will be responsible for designing the laboratory exercises. Required work hours will be from 1:00-8:45 PM.
