Job Description:

Bunker Hill Community College, a vibrant and diverse higher education learning environment in Boston, Massachusetts, is seeking a dynamic leader to assume the role of Director of Athletics and Wellness. This full-time position reports to the Chief Student Affairs Officer/Dean of Students and directly supervises the Fitness Center Manager, Administrative Assistant, and 6 part-time head coaches. This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. The successful candidate will be well-organized with financial planning and management skills and will directly supervise all compliance processes to adhere to NJCAA rules and regulations, in a manner consistent with the high ethical standards of the College.

Student Academic Success

  • Understand and foster student-athlete academic success by ensuring that all athletes receive appropriate and timely support, resources and referrals for personal, academic and success services
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to inclusion and diversity including but not limited to differences in ethnicity, national origin, race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identification and abilities


  • Recruit, appoint, orient, supervise and evaluate contract coaching staff and athletic support staff
  • Create and implement an annual coaching workshop reviewing College policies, resources, and compliance requirements
  • Directly supervise fulltime Fitness Manager and Administrative Assistant
  • Hire and supervise all Athletic support professionals such as referees, line judges, score keepers, statisticians, and announcers
  • Provide leadership, organization, training for staff in order to attain optimal operational, academic, fiscal and athletic performance


  • Supervise all administrative, operational and business functions of the Department in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the College
  • Cultivate and enhance relationships both on campus and in the community to support and represent the mission of the College and the Department of Athletics and Wellness
  • Supervise scheduling for all intercollegiate athletic events and facilities
  • Direct athletic program expansion in Wellness Education and Intramural Sports
  • Provide home game coverage for all sports
  •  Assure all athletic events are organized in a professional manner that adheres to all health, safety, NJCAA and best practices in the field of Higher Education Community College Athletics
  • Serve as a liaison to the Office of Enrollment Management for all Athletics
  • Co-organize recruitment plans with Enrollment Management and Coaching Staff
  • Be an active member of the Division of Student Affairs and the College by participating in staff meetings, trainings, retreats and professional development opportunities

Fiscal Management

  • Identify and prioritize the Department's funding requirements and administer the annual operating budget
  • Direct the purchase, maintenance and inventory of athletic gear and equipment

NJCAA Eligibility

  • Maintain athletic records and data for athletic teams to meet NJCAA compliance
  • Oversee compliance with all College, NJCAA and Conference rules and regulations
  • Work collaboratively with Academic Advisors in Life Map to facilitate academic support, registration and educational plans for each athlete
  • Work with the registrar and advisors to monitor course load of each athlete
  • Responsible for NJCAA eligibility compliance by preparing student-athlete eligibility paperwork for each sport in accordance with internal expectations and timelines
  • Attend NJCAA Compliance Seminar at least once every three years and review updates from NJCAA each semester
  • Abide by all NJCAA guidelines


  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Sports and Athletic Administration or related field
  • At least five years of professional Higher Education or High School Athletic Administration
  • Demonstrated knowledge of athletic sporting programs with respect to planning, equipment, compliance issues, and facility needs
  • Commitment to the philosophy of Division III Athletics at a large urban Community College
  • Proven ability to work with a diverse faculty, staff and student population
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral, written, and interpersonal communications required
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Exceptional collaborative leadership skills to work with multiple departments throughout the college to ensure the success of student athletes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience at the Community College NJCAA Division III level and those with a demonstrated affiliation, experience and active engagement with professional organizations appropriate to the institution and position
  • Understanding of the dynamics and trends in intercollegiate athletics in general and NJCAA Division III in particular
  • Prior intercollegiate athletic leadership including supervision of coaching and professional staff
