Washington State University Tri-Cities (WSU Tri-Cities) and the School of Biological Sciences seek a creative faculty member to build an interdisciplinary health sciences program in research and teaching at WSU Tri-Cities.

Biology-based interdisciplinary health science has been identified as one of the key research and teaching clusters at WSU Tri-Cities. WSU Tri-Cities has research programs in diverse areas of biological and health sciences including evolutionary morphology and developmental biology, computational mathematical biology, bioproducts, viticulture & enology, food and environmental quality, clinical and community psychology, personality disorders, K-12 STEM education, and nursing practice. The area of research specialization is open, but priority will be given to candidates whose disciplinary focus encompasses single cell biology, microbial ecology, human microbiomes, biofilms, or computational modeling of microbial communities.

Required Qualifications

Doctorate in biology or a related discipline by the hire date.

For hire at the Associate Professor rank, candidates should have the equivalent of at least five years of a successful, funded research program in biological sciences comparable to that expected for a full-term assistant professor.

For hire at the Professor rank, candidates should have the equivalent of at least 10 years of a successful, funded research program in biological sciences comparable to that expected for a productive associate professor.

Candidates should have an active research program, a strong publication record relative to career stage, a record of external funding for research commensurate with career stage, evidence of or potential for interdisciplinary research collaborations; record indicating ability to mentor graduate students and graduate research, record demonstrating ability to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses that complement the existing curriculum, ability to communicate effectively with other scientists, ability to serve under-represented groups and to contribute to WSU’s diversity goals in research, teaching, mentoring, and/or service.

Research strengths in one or more of the following areas: single cell biology, microbial ecology, human microbiomes, biofilms, or computational modeling of microbial communities.

Preferred Qualifications

Training or publication record indicating broad knowledge of biology.

Evidence of a commitment to teaching excellence.

Research specialization in single cell biology, microbial ecology, human microbiomes, biofilms, or computational modeling of microbial communities.

A record of collaborative research and teaching.

Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with internal and external constituencies that represent diverse cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.

Monthly Salary

Commensurate with qualifications and experience

Additional Information

This is a permanent,full-time (academic year),open rank, tenure track position in Biology at the Washington State University (WSU) Tri-Cities campus in Richland, WA.

This open rank position can be offered at Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level depending on candidate qualifications. Salary is commensurate with training and experience. The position is available as early as August 16, 2017.

The new hire will help to shape the expansion of the WSU Tri-Cities growing sciences programs, maintain an active research program that supports the training of graduate and undergraduate students and has potential for collaboration with scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and other faculty in the Washington State University system, participate in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on topics of microbiology or microbial ecology, and participate in service at the department, college, and/or university level. The teaching load is typically two courses per academic year.
