Detailed Job Description

The Summer Assistant Residence Director (SPARD) must have a passion for working with creative students and will serve as a co creator of a vibrant and innovative environment for student engagement. This position will have various responsibilities for supporting, advising, programming, and maintaining a safe community for primarily high school aged students enrolled in Berklee Summer Programs.

In order to do this, the Summer Assistant Residence Director (SPARD), will functionally report to the office of Housing and Residence Life, but will have periphery assignments with the Student Activities Center and the Office of Summer Programs. The Summer Assistant Residence Director (SPARD) will co-supervise between 5-12 Resident Assistants.

The position is an 8 week, 35 hour, live-in position (Possibility of 12 week position if available).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a weeklong training program for the Resident Assistants with the help of the Full time RD staff.

  • Oversee and manage nightly check-in off all minor students.

  • Provide accurate reports to staff on student attendance.

  • Communicate with parents and families in response to minor students.

  • Accompany minor students to the hospital when needed.

  • Conduct several rounds of the building while covering duty shifts.

  • Provide programmatic support to the student activities center.

  • Provide programmatic support to the Summer Programs Office.

  • Respond to situations during assigned shift.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist with web-based research, preparing reports, compiling data for presentations as it relates to job functions. Complete clerical tasks such as copying, filing, faxing, data entry, returning phone calls, work on mass mailings and updating computer documents as it relates to job duties.
  • Collect receipts, complete purchase orders, work with vendors. Reconcile your own monthly credit card statements.
  • Serve on appropriate college committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Other Information or Comments:
  • Weekend and evening hours as required by programs. Some holidays required.

On Working with Minors:

  • Previous experience working with minors preferred

  • Conduct him/her/themselves in such a manner as to reflect well on the staff and the college

  • Understanding that in a population of minors that there are restrictions and guidelines on discussions and behavior that are age-appropriate

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality amongst staff in regard to parent’s rights to information about their minor age children

Compensation package to include the following:

  • Stipend in the amount of $12/hour plus room & board

  • Board via a meal plan

  • A single room for the length of the commitment

Required Skills

  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail for tasks such as, filing, data entry and other clerical tasks.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member when giving and receiving feedback.

  • Highly dependable. Ability to assume responsibility for delegated tasks and meet agreed upon deadlines (for both immediate and long term projects). Awareness of punctuality and reliability as a key to office and team success.Computer skills and technical fluency including Word, Excel, and Filemaker with minimal training provided. Must also be adept in web-based research.

  • Good customer service skills.

  • Proven ability to work & lead effectively in a highly diverse campus community.

Required Experience

  • Experience with event planning and managing multiple tasks and deadlines. Ability to manage logistics involved in planning and implementing large and small scale events.

  • Experience supervising or serving as advisor to student leaders in a campus environment.

  • Familiarity with university/college setting and student affairs functions preferred. Ability to form and maintain positive relationships with students.

  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to college’s diversity statement and creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students.
