Detailed Job Description

Aids in design and teaches assigned chemistry laboratories. Plans, prepares, and follows approved lab course of study correlated with associated lecture course for that lab series to include measurable objectives for each lab section. Prepares laboratory instructional materials (e.g. mock-ups, visual aids, and instruction sheets) as necessary. May be assigned by the department chair to assist Lab Managers or Instructors. May be assigned by the department chair to teach lower division chemistry lecture courses.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with an appropriate degree in a related field to the coursework being taught. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree in Chemistry or a related field required.

Ph.D. Preferred.


Knowledge of laboratory protocols, procedures, and practices within the relevant field of study.

Knowledge of safety standards for the use of laboratory equipment, facilities, and supplies.

Knowledge of instructing laboratory materials receiving and storage procedures.

Knowledge of the use of Microsoft Excel to plot chemistry data and solve chemistry problems.


Skills in effective instructional strategies and techniques in chemistry.

Skills in providing guidance and instruction in laboratory protocols and in the safe use of laboratory equipment.

Skills in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

Effective interpersonal, problem solving, and decision-making skills.


Ability to teach, manage, motivate, and evaluate students in a laboratory and/or classroom setting.

Ability to communicate information in an effective and clear manner easily understood by students.

Ability to maintain quality, safety, and hazardous material handling procedures in the laboratory.

This position is for current UVU employees only.

An individual who meets at least one of the following criteria may apply for this position as an in-house applicant:
-Adjunct faculty status for at least two full semesters immediately prior to the position’s opening date,

-Non-Student Part-time hourly employee employed a minimum of 6 consecutive months, working at least an average of 20 hours per week, immediately prior to the position’s opening date, OR

-Salaried employee employed a minimum of 6 consecutive months, working at least an average of 30 hours per week, immediately prior to the position’s opening date.
