Detailed Job Description

The successful candidate for this position teaches existing courses, and develop new courses and materials, in the technical side of animation and game design, including without limitation current versions of Unity 3D and Unreal Engine, scripting in C#, Javascript, and proprietary scripting languages, After Effects, Photoshop, Maya, Houdini, and team-based development of animation and video game projects, including Agile and other popular development methodologies. Ample scholarship and service are part of this job description. The ability to be goal and team oriented, and to work well with others fostering a positive environment are a must. Candidate will be asked to join and support the animation and game design programs already operating in the Digital Media Department of Utah Valley University, and to assist in building up a new technical animation track to prepare students for industry-based animation careers including, without limitation, medical animations, mechanical animations, accident reconstruction, and technical direction of digital animation activities. Position responsible for attracting funding through the writing and supervision of grants, and though fostering of industry contacts and relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with terminal, earned degree appropriate to discipline. ABD accepted. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university. Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Animation, Game Development, or related disciplines, e.g., CS, or MFA with appropriate emphases for this post, etc. required, or terminal degree preferred. In lieu of terminal degree a minimum of 5 years relevant industry experience can be considered, with commitment to seek and secure terminal degree within reasonable time after hire.

Animation technical direction or similar industry experience is required.

Demonstrated commitment to teaching and previous educational participation preferred.


Experienced in animation and game development processes and methodologies that employ technical activities such as scripting, finishing of assets for technical direction, modeling, rigging, texturing, lighting, rendering, incorporation into game engines, compiling, testing, and delivery.

Knowledge of major animation scripting languages and implementation, and how to effectively and engagingly teach this knowledge to students is required.

Experience working on a variety of animation and/or video game development projects.


Fluent in one or more of the following languages: C#,MEL, Python, and other leading scripting languages, including proprietary languages such as the scripting language built into Maya Unity or Houdini.

HTML and CSS knowledge preferred.

Must have experience in Agile/Scrum methodologies for development, enabling collaboration between technical and artistic teams, and effective workflow for both animation and game development projects.

Previous experience at a major animation, visual FX, game, or other studio preferred.

Good people skills and teaching acumen are a must.


Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

Must have ability to be resourceful, make decisions quickly, approach tasks in a positive way, and think on their feet.

Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions in the professional field and industry, and stay abreast and functional with new innovations and trends.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, industry, staff, and students.
