Position Summary and Responsibilities Vassar College invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Students. This position is charged with overseeing those operations of the college that affect the residential lives of students and the well-being of the campus community. In the performance of this office, the dean of students shall be responsible to the dean of the college.
The dean of students oversees the health service, office of health education, and office of residential life, which manages all aspects of residential life at the college. Responsibilities include leading student orientation activities, managing campus emergencies, overseeing the student conduct process and chairing the work of the student support network.
A substantial portion of the dean's time is spent dealing with a wide variety of problems, concerns and emergencies related to students, their families, faculty, and other members of the campus community in their interactions with students. The dean plays a critical leadership role in advancing the college's goal of sustaining a well-qualified, diverse student body, which in the aggregate, reflects cultural pluralism, and to foster in those students a respect for difference and a commitment to common purposes. The dean is a key member of the crisis response planning group and has on-call responsibilities. The dean is often relied upon to communicate with both internal and external constituents in crisis situations. Additional committee work related to the quality of student life is expected. Additional duties as assigned by the dean of the college or the president.
A doctoral degree in a relevant discipline is preferred. At least five years of progressively responsible experience in working with students in a residential, liberal arts learning environment. The successful candidate will also have: the ability to set strategic direction and design and implement effective policies and programs; skills in collaboration, managing change, and building consensus; skills in negotiation, mediation, and conflict management; ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to gather, assemble, analyze and evaluate facts, evidence, data and other information in order to make sound decisions and recommendations; ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality; ability to handle multiple priorities and changing work conditions; strong leadership and supervisory skills; and demonstrated accomplishments in advancing the health and well-being of a college or university community. Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and collaborate with a diverse set of constituents, most notably students, is essential.
