This position is a two-year renewable contract, beginning August 2016. The position will teach graduate courses, serve as the Distance Education Coordinator and provide leadership through the School’s web presence and social media. The appointment is 50 percent administrative and 50 percent instructional.


The School of Library and Information Studies, College of Communication & Information Science, and The University of Alabama, invites applications and nominations for an Assistant Professor position with a two-year renewable contract, beginning August 2016. The successful candidate will receive an appointment that is 50 percent administrative and 50 percent instructional.This position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of activities in the School and to make a difference both administratively and instructionally.

The Assistant Professor will be the School’s Distance Education Coordinator and will provide leadership through the School’s web presence and social media. The Assistant Professor will also assist the director and staff in accreditation reporting.

The instructional aspect of the position requires teaching primarily in the core curriculum. Preference will be given to candidates who are prepared to teach at least two of the required courses: Introduction to Library & Information Studies, Organization of Information, Research Methods, Information Sources & Services, Administration & Management, and Information Technologies. Instruction is offered online as well as on-campus and off-site (face to face.)

Required Qualifications:
• Earned doctorate or terminal degree (must be earned prior to start date.)
• A Master’s degree in Library & Information Studies or its equivalent
• Evidence of intermediate web design experience
• Evidence of excellent spoken and written communication skills
• Experience in the use of Blackboard Collaborate or other Distance Education technology
• Demonstrated experience working with student in online formats

Desired Qualifications:
• Teaching experience
• Experience with accreditation, assessment, or certification programs
• Professional experience in a library, information center, or other information-rich environment

The School, with 14 faculty members, offers an ALA-accredited Master’s program, an MFA program in the book arts, and doctoral courses that contribute to a multidisciplinary doctorate in communication and information sciences. The School is selective in admissions for all program options and the MLIS program ranks among the top 20 programs in North America.
