An Associate in Research is sought to assist with field, greenhouse and laboratory research directed at understanding the epidemiology and control of soilborne pathogens of wheat. Position responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to: establishment, maintenance, and harvest of field plots, including application of pesticides; initiation and maintenance of greenhouse experiments including disease evaluation; detection of pathogens in plant tissue with polymerase chain reaction, serology and direct isolation; maintenance of pathogen cultures; training and supervision of temporary employees; development of experimental designs and collection, summarization, and statistical analysis of data in conjunction with the principal investigator.
Required: A Master’s degree in Plant Pathology or related field; field, greenhouse and/or laboratory research knowledge; demonstrated ability managing field plots and working with farm equipment; plant pathology skills including microbiological methods; familiarity with routine software packages; self-starter who is able to work independently and enjoy the challenge of working in a program with a diverse range of activities and projects; valid driver’s license; and ability to successfully work with a diverse, cross-cultural team is also necessary.
Preferred: Demonstrated ability with wheat, soilborne plant pathogens, statistics, and/or plant breeding, excellent communication skills and ability to operate vehicles with manual transmission. The successful candidate will be required to obtain a State of Washington Public Pesticide Applicator’s License within 6 months of employment.
Availability: The position is available July 1, 2016, and is temporary, 12 month, full-time. Initial appointment is for 1 year and is annually renewable and dependent upon continued funding.
